Short answer: Detroit-area clients often juggle shift work, long commutes across the metro and winters that shrink outdoor walking. A longevity coach here earns trust by coaching sleep, protein, strength and indoor movement that survive January — and by refusing to sell peptides or GLP-1 pens. Coaches educate and refer. They never diagnose, prescribe, dose or sell.

The Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro has about 4,400,578 residents (US Census Bureau, Vintage 2025 estimate). See our Detroit hub.

Skill 1: guidelines first

Anchor plans to the US Physical Activity Guidelines: 150–300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, muscle-strengthening on two or more days, and balance work for older adults. For shift workers, minutes can land at odd hours — that is fine if the weekly total holds. The goal is a plan that survives overtime weeks, not a perfect Instagram week.

Skill 2: strength and fitness literacy

Cite strength (Momma et al., 2022) and fitness (Mandsager et al., 2018) associations carefully — support for habits, not guarantees. Observational data link higher fitness and regular muscle-strengthening to lower long-term mortality; that is not a personal guarantee. Home dumbbells, a gym near the plant or hospital, or a lunch-hour class all count.

Skill 3: winter and indoor defaults

Michigan winters make outdoor walking unreliable. Build indoor defaults early: mall loops, treadmill minutes, gym tracks, parking-garage loops if safe. "I'll start again in April" is not a plan. Pair indoor movement with the protein-first pattern from the 2025 joint advisory so winter under-eating does not quietly erase lean mass (Mozaffarian et al., 2025).

Skill 4: shift-work sleep literacy (habit layer only)

Help clients protect a dark, cool sleep window after nights, and keep caffeine cut-offs honest. Do not diagnose sleep apnoea or prescribe sleep medicines. Refer snoring, gasping or extreme daytime sleepiness to the client's clinician. If a client on a GLP-1 medicine reports new dizziness or inability to keep fluids down after nights, that is a same-day clinical issue — not a sleep-hack problem.

Skill 5: protect muscle for clients on GLP-1 medicines

FDA-approved GLP-1 and dual agonists can produce substantial average weight loss in trials (Wilding et al., 2021), and lean-mass loss is a documented concern (Neeland et al., 2024). Help clients keep protein-first small meals and twice-weekly strength when appetite drops. Dosing, side effects and product choice stay with the prescriber. Coaches never source pens. FDA has clarified compounding policies as supply has begun to stabilize (FDA).

Skill 6: employer and plant wellness programmes

If a workplace vendor offers "GLP-1 coaching" or longevity perks, clarify your scope in writing: behaviour only; no prescribing; clear referral path to the client's clinician. Do not become the company's prior-authorisation fixer or pharmacy liaison.

Skill 7: scope and referral scripts

National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching materials describe coaching as partnering on behaviour, not diagnosing or treating disease (NBHWC scope). Practise scripts for:

  • "Can you get me peptides cheaper?" → "I don't source medicines. Ask your clinician."
  • "My plant wellness vendor said you can help with my shot." → "I coach habits. Your clinician handles the medicine."
  • "This clinic promises to reverse ageing in 30 days." → "That is a medical claim. Talk to your doctor; we stay on habits." FDA's health fraud page helps clients spot red flags.

A Detroit week that still hits the guidelines

Two strength sessions booked like shifts, indoor walking that does not depend on ice, protein-first meals that survive cafeteria and late takeout, and a clear path back to the client's clinician when medicine questions appear. Track weekly minutes across rotating schedules.

Building a practice without grey-market income

Charge for coaching time, programmes and education. Do not take affiliate income from research-use-only peptides or compounded "research" pens. Write your Michigan scope down; practising medicine, pharmacy, dietetics and PT are regulated. Decline sourcing requests in writing when they become persistent.

Common Detroit client questions

  • "I work nights — when am I supposed to lift?" "Pick two consistent windows after you sleep, even if they look odd on a calendar."
  • "Can you help me get compounded semaglutide through the wellness vendor?" "I don't source medicines. Ask your clinician and pharmacist."
  • "I barely eat after overtime weeks." "Let's pre-decide two protein options you can finish, and tell your doctor if under-eating is extreme."

Where Detroit coaches fit next

Manufacturing, healthcare and logistics schedules create clients who need flexible minutes, not boutique perfection. Your differentiator is a plan that survives overtime and ice. Keep a short written scope, practise declining sourcing requests, and partner with clinicians who want habit support — not a grey-market supply chain.

Winter plus shift work: a coaching checklist

Before January, agree indoor walking defaults, two strength windows that rotate with the shift calendar, a protein option that survives cafeteria food, and a rule for when fatigue or dizziness becomes a clinician call rather than a "push through" moment.

Employer wellness without becoming a pharmacy

Detroit-area employers sometimes add weight-management or "longevity" vendors. If you subcontract into those programmes, put your scope in the contract: behaviour coaching only; no prescribing; no product fulfilment; clear escalation to the client's own clinician. If a vendor asks you to promote a specific compounded peptide or grey-market channel, decline. Your reputation is worth more than that referral fee.

Community and culture notes for coaches

Clients may train around church calendars, youth sports and rotating family care. Build plans that tolerate missed days and restart without shame. Strength and walking minutes still count when they land on Saturday instead of Tuesday. Avoid moralising food after shift work — focus on protein-first options the client can actually obtain at 2am.
